80-year-old woman throws 9 coins into plane’s engine for good luck

An elderly woman caused plane passengers to freak out by tossing coins at the engine moments before take off, according to police in China.

Shanghai police said that they have arrested the 80-year-old woman who was identified as Qiu, after being accused of interfering with China Southern Airlines Flight CZ380.

According to the police investigation, Qiu and her family were scheduled to fly from Shanghai to Guangzhou. After the 150 passengers boarded the plane, Qiu left the aircraft and tossed 9 coins at the engine.

The other passengers who witnessed the spectacle, notified the flight crew and the police were called to the scene. During questioning, Qiu told police that she practices Buddhism and threw the coins into the engine for good luck.

A team of technicians were called to the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, and they removed the cons from the engine.

The coin toss caused a five hour delay for the flight.
