A man who has been serving as a police officer for 20 years, may now lose his job for picking up a prostitute so he can have sex with her.

The Florida officer was busted during an undercover sting operation by his own colleagues.

It was 8:00 a.m., when 46-year-old Reginald Mitchell was seen driving up to Amanda McLaughlin, 32, who has a history of prostitution.

Mitchell solicited the woman for sex, and as soon as she got into his car, other St. Petersburg officers who were working undercover on the scene, approached his car.

Initially, they thought that the suspect was a regular civilian customer, but they were surprised to learn that he was a longtime police officer.

Mitchell was arrested for misdemeanor solicitation. He was not placed in handcuffs or booked into jail as is standard procedure. Instead, the off-duty officer was given a summons.

Because McLaughlin had prior convictions for prostitution, she was arrested and charged with a felony.

Mitchell was placed on desk duty, pending an internal investigation and pending on the outcome of the court case.

St. Petersburg Police Chief Tony Holloway said the incident gave a bad name to other officers in the force.
