(Scroll down for video) A mother was furious that her family members called child protective services on her and caused her to lose custody of her daughter.

42-year-old Jody Herring of Vermont, committed 4 murders when she decided to kill three of her family members and a social worker whom she held responsible for losing custody of her 9-year-old daughter.

The victims were identified as the suspect’s aunt, 73-year-old Julie Falzarano, her cousins, Regina Herring, 43, and Rhonda Herring, 48, and Department for Children and Families social worker Lara Sobel, 48.

At first, the defense team tried to get the case dismissed on the grounds that Herring was incompetent to stand trial due to mental illness. However, they have since dropped that argument.

Herring faced life in prison without the possibility of parole.

However, in a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the aggravated murder charges, which would have resulted in a mandatory life sentence without parole.

Herring pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder.

This will allow the defense to have an opportunity to argue for a sentence that will allow her to be released on parole at some point, according to defense attorney David Sleigh.
