Handcuffed man dies after fleeing scene in stolen police car and crashing

A young man died after stealing a police car while officers were investigating him.

Police in Michigan, said that 24-year-old Phillip Everett, died after crashing a Michigan State Police vehicle that he managed to steal while being detained on suspicion of drunk driving.

In a press release, authorities said that officers were dispatched to the area of M-55 and Plank Road in Tawas, at around 4:00 a.m., on Sunday, after a man was seen driving a golf cart along the highway without headlights.

Officers handcuffed the driver while they went to inspect the golf cart as they suspected t was stolen.

Everett was able to get into the driver’s seat of the police cruiser and he sped off.

Everett crashed into a tree about 20 miles away, and he was ejected from the vehicle. He was rushed to a hospital and later died of his injuries.
