(Scroll down for video) Police in New York, are asking people to come forward with information in what they deemed as a hate crime.

Police were called to the Hillside Islamic Center in Long Island, after an employee found a painting of Jesus.

The employee alerted the police, who arrived at the North Hyde Park Islamic center mosque, at about 5:40 p.m.

Officers found a large turquoise painting of Jesus on the cross. It was left hanging on the fence in front of the center.

Police are now investigating whether it was a bias incident.

In a statement, the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said: “Bias may have motivated this incident, but it could serve as a teaching moment for the perpetrator and for the community if it leads to greater understanding of the love Muslims have for Jesus, peace be upon him.”
