(Scroll down for video) A jealous man was arrested and is facing life in prison for chopping off the fingers of wife’s right hand.

21-year-old Hawa Akther Ju of Dhaka, Bangladesh, went to college while her husband, 30-year-old Rafiqul Islam, was a migrant worker in the United Arab Emirates.

Islam warned his wife not to attend college, but she did so anyway.

When Islam returned home, he told his wife that he had a surprise for her. He blindfolded his wife and told her to stretch her arm out so he can hand her the gift.

However, instead of giving her a gift, the husband, with the help of his cousin, cut off the five fingers of her right hand with a machete.

The relative then took the fingers away from the scene to ensure that doctors could not reattach them.

Akhter has now spoken out publicly about the attack.

She said that she moved back to her parent’s home and has learned to write with her left hand so that she can continue her studies in college despite the horrific attack.

Ju wants to become a lawyer.

Bangladeshi police chief Mohammed Salahuddin, said that Islam confessed to the crime.

“He was jealous because he only had a standard eighth grade education while she went to college to pursue higher education,” said Salahuddin.

Islam was charged with permanent disfiguration. Human rights groups are demanding that he is sentenced to life in prison.
