A mother sold her young child to a human trafficker because she wanted to raise enough money to buy herself a new motorcycle, according to police in Nigeria.

Anambra police said that they have arrested 24-year-old Oluchi Emeobi, after selling her 2-month-old baby to an unidentified woman.

Emeobi’s friend, 26-year-old Nchedoch Richard, was also arrested for helping the suspect sell her baby.

Emeobi has been charged with human trafficking while Richard faces one count of conspiracy.

According to the police investigation, Emeobi gave birth to a healthy baby about 2 months ago.

Last week, Emeobi’s friends and family became suspicious as the baby disappeared. Police were called and they questioned Emeobi.

At first, Emeobi claimed that she handed the baby over to a babysitter who disappeared with her child.

Eventually she admitted to selling the baby to a human trafficker to raise enough cash to buy a new motorcycle.

Police seized the motorcycle from the mother’s home, and arrested her and her friend.
