A dog is lucky to be alive after being rescued from a field, according to police in the United Kingdom.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was contacted on Tuesday, after the shar pei dog was found in fields near Street Lane, in Lower Whitley, Warrington.

The dog that was named Torres.

Police attempted to contact the dog’s owner named on its microchip, but the phone number was no longer in service.

RSPCA inspector Naomi Norris said: “Torres had various patches on his body – including on his back and on his legs – which, when it was found, were completely infested with maggots.

“There were hundreds of maggots burrowing in his skin and had been suffering a great deal. We don’t know if it has escaped from someone’s garden or if the dog was dumped, but Torres is friendly and approachable.

“We need to know if anyone recognizes the dog, and if so, to contact us on 0300 123 8018 so we can find out how it came to be in this condition.”
