Woman burns down her house after trying to kill bug with cigarette lighter under her bed

(Scroll down for video) A woman burned down her own home while trying to kill a bug with a cigarette lighter, according to firefighters in Kansas.

Monique Quarles of Topeka, said that she noticed the bug on Monday, at round 4:00 a.m.

She grabbed a cigarette lighter and wanted to use fire to burn the bug. Quarles said that when she activated the cigarette lighter, sparks began to fly and her bed caught on fire.

She tried to extinguish the fire, but failed. Quarles the ran out of her apartment and alerted her neighbors to the fire.

In total, 13 adults and 6 children were displaced as a result of the fire at the Fairlawn Green Apartments complex.

The Topeka Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Herrera said that the fire caused about $140,000 in damages.

One resident was injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. One firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion.
