(Scroll down for video) A teenager died while trying to save a dog from a pond.

14-year-old Khrystyna Maksymova of Edmonton, Canada, loved animals and she often walked her neighbors’ dogs around a drainage pound in their neighborhood.

On Saturday, Maksymova and her 11-year-old sister Anastasiia, were walking a dog around the pond just before 2:00 p.m.

The dog somehow got off its leash and jumped into the pond. Being a good swimmer, Maksymova went in after it.

She almost made it through to the other side when she got stuck in the mud and reeds, and was pulled underwater.

Her younger sister called for help. Fire chief Ed Pitman said that the conditions were tough and the water had “zero visibility.”

This made it difficult for neighbors who tried to rescue the girl and for firefighters as they worked on removing her from the pond.

Maksymova was rushed to a hospital, where she was placed on life support. The machines were later turned off and she died.

Maksymova’s parents Svitlana and Volodymyr, are Ukrainian immigrants to Canada.
