A man suffered a gunshot wound after trying to stab a couple as they exited their hotel room.

The couple was staying at the Hermitage hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, when 48-year-old James Grisham tried to stab the couple in order to gain entry to their room.

Unbeknownst to the suspect, one of the victims were armed with a gun.

The man pushed Grisham to the ground and grabbed his gun from a nearby table. He then shot Grisham in the left bicep. He then held the suspect down until police arrived.

The victim told police that Grisham was in the elevator with them about 10 minutes before the incident.

When they went up to their room with the elevator, they walked towards their room while Grisham also exited and walked in the opposite direction.

A few minutes later, the victim opened the door to the room and found Grisham trying to stab him with an object. Believing it to be a knife and fearing for his life, the victim shot Grisham.

Police recovered the weapon, which turned out to be a fork.

No charges were filed against the victims because the shooting was in self-defense and the man has a valid Tennessee permit to carry a handgun.

Grisham was taken to a hospital for treatment before being arrested on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
