(Scroll down for video) Police launched a child abuse investigation, after a young girl died as a result of drinking boiling water from a cup with a straw, according to police in Florida.

8-year-old Kiari Pope of Palm Beach County, said that she drank boiling water after she and her cousin saw someone do it on YouTube.

Her cousin dared her to do it, and she drank from a cup of boiling water with a straw. As a result, Pope suffered burns in her windpipe.

She needed surgery, and doctors performed a tracheostomy to help her breathe. On Sunday night, Pope told the 29-year-old boyfriend of her mother that she could not breathe.

She collapsed shortly thereafter. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead at 12:15 a.m., on Monday.

The girl’s mother, 22-year-old Marquisia Bonner, wrote: “My 8-year-old daughter Kiari Pope, was dared to drink hot boiling water by a cousin that was the same age as her.

“They saw a video on YouTube, after which the cousin dared her to do it. Pope was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital to get incubation.

“Eventually, she had an emergency surgery to receive a tracheostomy, which caused her to have chronic respiratory problems.

“She was unable to talk until her death. She left behind a young devoted mother, father, sisters, and brothers.”
