(Scroll down for video) Beachgoers were shocked to find a woman's hand sticking out from the sand early in the morning, and they called police, according to police in Maryland.

The Ocean City Police Department said that officers responded to the scene of a death investigation in the area of 2nd Street and the Beach.

Beachgoers reported seeing the body to city employees at approximately 6:30 a.m., at which time they alerted Ocean City dispatchers.

The Ocean City Police Department has been provided an official ruling in the death investigation that began on Monday. The victim, Ashley O’Connor, 30, of Plano, Texas, was found on the beach in the early morning hours.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the death to be accidental caused by asphyxia due to suffocation.

The preliminary investigation revealed that O’Connor walked onto the beach alone at approximately 2:00 a.m., and was later discovered in a hole covered by sand.

Her family members said that they were on vacation in the city and they got separated at around 2:00 a.m. O’Connor then went for a walk on the beach alone.

It remains to be determined at this time if O’Connor fell into the hole or climbed in on her own accord.

A portion of the beach was closed on Monday as the Ocean City Police Forensic Services Unit worked to recover the body from the sand with assistance from Maryland State Police crime scene technicians.

The body was removed at approximately 4:15 p.m., and the beach was open to the public at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Police issued the following warning to beachgoers: "Be careful when digging holes. No hole should be deeper than the knees of the shortest person near the hole.

"Sand is very unstable and may suddenly collapse without warning and cause a suffocation emergency. Holes also create a potential danger for those people responsible to maintain and patrol the beach throughout the night."
