A teen fatally shot himself at retired correction officer’s home while hanging out with friends

The retired corrections officer is being investigated after her gun was used in the death of the teenager.

15-year-old Derek Cosme of Long Island, New York, was hanging out with three friends in a home while nobody else was there.

The teens found an unlocked loaded gun, which police said was licensed. While playing with the gun, Cosme accidentally shot himself.

Emergency workers arrived, but were unable to save the teen. He died from a single gunshot wound.

Cosme’s aunt, Rosa Vasquez Williams, said that the teen’s mother was not notified of the incident until she arrived to the home on Williams Street in Glen Cove, to pick up her son.

When the mother arrived, she saw police and an ambulance at the scene. She then learned that her son was no longer alive.

Cosme, who was preparing to go into 11th grade at Glen Cove High School, leaves behind his mother Luz, and his four older sisters, Tahessha, Shadarra, Kristal, and Jasmine.

Sister Jasmine Elise Vasquez set up a GoFundMe page, where she wrote that her brother “was very outgoing, friendly, smart and just loved by so many.”

“No family should carry such a burden alone. We are asking for help to relieve our family of the stress of these expenses, for all who loved Derek and our family to come together to provide a beautiful ceremony that he deserves,” she wrote.

The family has collected $15,000 of their $20,000 goal so far.
