A man of Saskatchewan, Canada, was jailed after assaulting a police officer who tried to rescue him while he was swimming.

The full details of a river rescue, emerged this week, when Curtis McKenzie, 25, pleaded guilty to mischief and assaulting a police officer.

McKenzie wore a large gauze bandage over her nose during his court appearance. It was only during the sentence that it was revealed that he cut off his nose while serving a federal prison sentence.

McKenzie also admitted that he was so high on crystal meth that he had no memory of swimming across the Saskatchewan South River, before assaulting his rescuer and then causing $900 of damage to a holding cell.

The incident unfolded last Thursday, when police and firefighters were called on reports of a man swimming in the river near the University Bridge at 4:00 a.m. He was shouting “f**k the police” while swimming and causing a great disturbance, prosecutor Frank Impey said.

Firefighters in a rescue boat first tried to get the man out, but he swam away or went underwater as they approached. They went back to shore and recruited two police officers to help.

The man continued to resist efforts to be taken out of the water.
Eventually, officers were able to get hold of McKenzie and took him back to shore.

He remained combative at the police station, plucking a sprinkler head, flooding his jail cell.

On Tuesday, McKenzie pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and mischief. He was on probation for aggravated assault.

McKenzie was ordered to serve five months in prison.

In court, the judge questioned prosecutors as to why McKenzie had gause on his nose.

Prosecutors assured the judge that the injury was not caused by police officers during his arrest, but that he cut off his own nose while serving his federal prison sentence.

During his time in jail, McKenzie was placed in solitary confinement. He became depressed and cut off his own nose.
