Police in the United Kingdom, were questioned over their decision to use a convicted pedophile to spy on other rapists at an underage sex party.

Northumbria Police’s Chief Constable Steve Ashman, defended the decision, saying that this action brought down many rapists who groomed at least 22 vulnerable girls.

The convicted child rapist was paid £9,680 ($12,500) over 21 months by Northumbria Police for information that led to the conviction of 18 gang members.

The spy who was identified as XY, was previously found guilty of drugging an underage girl and having sex with her. He then invited another man to rape the girl when he was done.

Attorneys for the suspects, tried to have the charges dropped against their clients over the fact that the informant himself was convicted of sex crimes against children.

However, a judge refused to drop the charges against the 17 men and one woman who were part of what became known as the “Newcastle Asian grooming gang.”

The group was accused of grooming underage girls, and giving them cannabis and alcohol before having sex with the girls over a period of four years.

Everyone in the group except for XY was convicted or pleaded guilty to charges including rape, supplying drugs and inciting prostitution, in a series of trials at Newcastle Crown Court.

The only woman, Carolann Gallon, 22, who was 17 and 18 years old at the time of her crimes, admitted three offenses of trafficking girls for the purposes of sexual exploitation. She is awaiting sentencing.

Yasser Hussain, 28, was identified as the man who hosted the party. He was sentenced to two years in prison for allowing his premises to be used for the sex parties.

Saiful Islam, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a 15-year-old girl.
