(Scroll down for video) Police got their hands dirty in order to catch a man who broke into a home and left his feces behind.

A homeowner in California, called police after noticing that someone was inside the home.

While most thieves are careful not to leave any trace behind, 42-year-old Andrew David Jensen of Ventura, made a crucial mistake, he forgot to flush the toilet.

Investigators said that Jensen used the bathroom, but he did not flush the toilet, leaving DNA evidence in the bathroom, which ultimately led to his arrest.

Detective Tim Lohman of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said that officers collected the evidence that was left behind when the suspect did not flush during the October break-in in the city of Thousand Oaks.

They found a DNA profile match in a national database 9 months after the crime took place.

Officers arrested Jensen at his home. He was charged with first-degree residential burglary, which is a felony. He is being held on $70,000 bail.

This is not the first time a thief was identified through an unflushed toilet.

Charles Williams of Oklahoma, stole gaming equipment, clothes and a BB gun, before relieving himself in the family’s toilet.

He left the toilet without flushing, and he also accidentally dropped a dirty tissue on the floor.

Police officers took that piece of toilet paper, which had the thief’s feces, and collected DNA evidence. Williams was arrested more than one year after he committed the crime.

Williams was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail, where he was held without bond.
