(Scroll down for video) A mother is facing many years in jail after being accused of trying to flush her newborn baby down a hospital toilet, according to police Iowa.

24-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader of Iowa City, has been charged with attempted murder after abandoning her baby in a trash can.

In court, Hautzenrader admitted that prosecutors have enough evidence to show that she was guilty of child endangerment.

She faces up to 12 years in prison.

According to the police investigation, at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Hautzenrader walked into the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

She went into a bathroom in the John Colloton Pavilion, and after giving birth, she tried to flush the baby down the toilet.

After being unsuccessful, Hautzenrader put the baby in a pillowcase and dropped him in the trash. She cleaned up the bathroom and left.

The baby was found alive by employees of the hospital shortly after the birth. Hautzenrader first told police that she did not know she was pregnant.

When police reviewed her cell phone, they saw text messages between her and her boyfriend, discussing the pregnancy.
