Elderly woman finds $180,000 in cash while going through trash in the street

(Scroll down for video) An elderly woman was shocked to find a large sum of cash among garbage in the street, according to police in Japan.

The Daishoji Police Station said that the 75-year-old woman handed over 20 million yen or about $180,000 to the police after finding the money stuffed in a suitcase at the garbage dumping area.

The incident unfolded on Monday, at around 7:00 a.m.

The elderly woman, who was not identified, told police that she regularly goes through the garbage in the area to find valuable items, which people discard.

Suddenly, she came across a briefcase. She opened it, and found the 20 million yen neatly wrapped in newspaper from 2005.

The packages of cash had labels from the Hokkoku Bank.

The woman immediately went to the police station to hand over her find. The police are looking for the owner of the cash.
