People were angry to watch a video, showing a woman slapping and biting her dog while traveling on a crowded train, according to police in Canada.
The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) has charged and arrested the 37-year-old Toronto woman, who was not identified, after a video surfaced of her allegedly beating and mistreating her Chinese Crested-type dog.
On Saturday, the OSPCA received a video from the Toronto Police Services of the woman mistreating her dog while on the Toronto subway.
An investigation into the situation was started. The OSPCA was able to obtain a warrant and removed the dog from the owner’s possession.
The dog is now in the care of the OSPCA.
“We are grateful for the public coming forward with this evidence that allowed us to conduct this investigation,” said Connie Mallory, Chief Inspector, OSPCA.
“The public must remember that video evidence is only one part of an investigation. A full investigation into the matter is what allowed us the opportunity under the law to remove the dog and lay these charges,” she added.
The woman has been charged with one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under the Criminal Code of Canada and one count of causing distress to an animal under the Ontario SPCA Act.
She is set to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough. The video shows the woman traveling on the train along with her dog.
At some point, she began violently pulling her dog by the leash.
She also bit and slapped the dog on the head. Passengers confronted the woman and ordered her to stop abusing the dog.
In response, the woman hurled obscenities at he passengers.
