A family outing in New Jersey, turned tragic when a man drowned while trying to retrieve his hat.

Authorities were called to the scene at about 4:15 p.m., on reports about the man drowning after jumping off a pontoon boat in a lake in an attempt to retrieve his hat.

About 10 relatives were traveling in the boat on Saturday, on Lake Hopatcong, when the hat belonging to 51-year-old Bo Long, flew into the water.

Long of Livingston, turned the boat around, turned off the engine and jumped into the water to retrieve his hat.

He recovered his hat, but by then, the boat began to float away.

Long, who was not wearing a life jacket, began swimming towards the boat, but he was pulled underwater.

Two passengers jumped into the lake and attempted to save him. Long was rescued from the water, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
