(Scroll down for video) A family was having a good time while on vacation before tragedy struck.

David Regoli said that his sister, a long time sixth-grade social studies teacher in the Burrell School District in Pennsylvania, died when she fell while laughing.

50-year-old Sharon Regoli Ciferno was severely injured when she accidentally fell off a rooftop balcony during a vacation in Mexico.

Ciferno, 50, initially went to California, with her daughter and two others before the four decided to cross the border and spend a few days in Mexico.

Ciferno went to visit a friend in Mexico. She and others were sitting on a balcony at the friend’s house. Ciferno sat on the ledge that acted as a bench for people to sit on.

At one point, someone made a joke and Ciferno put her head back as she laughed hard. This caused her to fall over and hit the ground.

She suffered multiple injuries to her body and brain. Ciferno was taken to a hospital before she was returned by ambulance to the United States for treatment.

Doctors at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego, placed her on a respirator, which was later removed.
