A man barked up the wrong tree when he tried to steal a car from three football players.

21-year-old Angelo Martinez of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was seen in his mugshot with severe injuries to his face, and he was unable to open his eyes.

According to police, Martinez was waiting outside the Loma Linda Community Center, where the football players had been practicing, and he asked three members of the team for a ride.

They agreed. However, when they reached the destination, Martinez pulled out a pistol and demanded that the men get out the vehicle.

The three men obeyed as they feared for their lives, but when they saw Martinez fumble with the gun, one of them jumped back and hit the suspect in the face.

The other players joined, beating Martinez before holding him down until police arrived.

Police discovered that the gun was not real, but found that Martinez also carried a knife.
