(Scroll down for video) Many people went outside in anticipation and hopes of getting a glimpse of the solar eclipse.

Police officers used this opportunity to search for a wanted sex offender, and their efforts paid off.

Since June, Iowa State Police had been searching for 26-year-old Ladarius Martez Blue of Waterloo, as he did not register himself on the sex offender list.

Blue, who was convicted of lascivious act with a child under 13 in 2010, was ordered to register as a sex offender, but he failed to comply.

This week, police narrowed down their search to a home in Cedar Rapids, where they believed he was hiding. Detectives set up surveillance videos outside the home.

At around 1:00 p.m., they saw Blue coming out of the house to watch the solar eclipse.

When Blue saw the officers approaching him, he ran off and led the officers on foot across several neighborhoods.

Officers lost sight of him, but not for long. A homeowner who was also outside to watch the solar eclipse, called and reported that a man had climbed into his trash can in the yard of his home.

Officers went to the home and arrested Blue, who did not get to see the eclipse after all.
