A good Samaritan was shocked to learn that he handed over a lost wallet to a police officer who then stole it.

Police in Japan, arrested one of their own after he was busted for stealing a wallet with cash.

35-year-old police officer Atsushi Kugaya of Tokyo, was arrested at work on suspicion of theft after stealing the wallet that had been handed over to him as a lost item.

According to police, Kugaya was on duty at the lost and found center on Saturday, at around 4:00 p.m., when the wallet was handed over to him by the good Samaritan.

Later in the day, a 70-year-old man realized that he had lost his wallet. When he went looking for it at the last place he had been, he was told that it was handed over to police.

The man went to the lost and found center at the police station, where Kugaya denied seeing the wallet.

The man reported the incident to other officers, who began an investigation.

Police said Kugaya eventually admitted that he did not report receiving the wallet, which had 40,000 yen ($360) in it.

The Marunouchi police department issued an apology, expressing regret that a police officer had betrayed the trust of the public.
