Farmer who shot and killed sister-in-law claims he mistook her for monkey

A man claims that he shot and killed his relative after mistaking her for a wild animal, according to police in Malaysia.

Bintulu police said that they have arrested the 59-year-old man, who was not identified, after being accused of killing 70-year-old Bermau Bauk.

The suspect has been charged with one count of causing death by negligence.

If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison.

According to the police investigation, the incident unfolded on Monday, at around 4:30 p.m.

The suspect was on his farm and hunting when he noticed something that appeared to be a monkey.

The suspect grabbed his gun and shot at the direction of the moving object.

When the farmer went to take a closer look, he realized that it was his sister-in-law Bauk.

The farmer told Bintulu police district commissioner Supt Zailani Amit, that his sister-in-law looked like a monkey so he shot her.

The suspect claimed that he was shocked to see that his sister-in-law was dead and is traumatized by the incident.
