People were shocked to see a man cutting off the head of a bird outside a public library, according to police in new York.

The New York Police Department said that they have arrested 34-year-old Daniel Dentre of Manhattan, after being accused of cutting off the head of a pigeon in Bryant Park.

Dentre is facing a charge of trespassing.

He will not be charged with killing the animal as it is legal to kill wild pigeons in New York.

According to the police investigation, the incident unfolded on Wednesday, at around 1:45 p.m.

Dentre was at the Bryant Park outside a branch of the New York Public Library, along with tourists.

The suspect suddenly grabbed the pigeon, and used a knife to cut off its head.

He then threw the bird to the ground.

Some of the stunned onlookers called police.

Police officers who arrived at the scene, found Dentre covered in blood.

They also noticed the remains of the bird on the ground.

Dentre was arrested for trespassing and was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
