A man managed to escape from police custody despite having handcuffs on one of his hand by biting an officer on the arm, according to police in Japan.

Kumagaya police said that they have arrested 31-year-old Nguyen Van Hai, after being accused of assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop.

Hai is facing charged of assault, escape, and driving without a license.

According to the police investigation, Hai is in the country illegally after overstaying his tourist visa.

On Thursday, at around 11:00 a.m., a police officer spotted a car with a dent on one of its doors.

The officer decided to pull over the vehicle and began questioning Hai.

After Hai refused to answer any questions, the officer tried to handcuff him.

After getting the handcuffs on one hand, Hai bit the officer on the arm and fled from the scene.

On Friday, Hai had second thoughts about escaping.

He called police and turned himself in.

Hai still had the handcuffs on his hand.

During questioning, he told police that he has applied for asylum in the country.

Hai said that he fled because he was driving without a valid license.
