Police were surprised to find a 13-year-old boy behind the wheel of a stolen car, following a head on collision, according to police in New Zealand.

Kawerau police said that the incident began when the boy and his two 16-year-old friends stole the car from a couple in town.

The couple reported the car stolen, and police officers were dispatched the search for the vehicle.

On Monday, police officers spotted the stolen vehicle on State Highway 30.

Police ordered the car to pull over, but the driver sped away, sparking a high-speed chase.

When the driver tried to overtake a tractor trailer, police suspended the chase.

Moments later, the driver crashed head on into another vehicle.

The 13-year-old driver of the stolen car and his two 16-year-old friends suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the other car and his elderly mother received moderate injuries and were taken to the Rotorua Hospital.

The 13-year-old boy is facing numerous charges, including theft.

He was booked into jail, and will appear at the Rotorua Youth Court soon.
