(Scroll down for video) The owners and employees of a small egg farm in Utah, are devastated after a fire ripped through their facilities and destroyed hundreds of thousands of chickens.
North Tooele Fire Crews were dispatched on Tuesday, at around 7:30 a.m., for a structure fire at Fassio Egg Farms in Erda.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a structure containing egg laying hens that was heavily involved in fire.
Within a matter of minutes, the fire spread to the entire structure.
The fire department requested the help of additional units.
“Initial attack was defensive, and our biggest challenge was an adequate water supply. We went through more than 150,000 gallons of water, but we were not able to supply water quick enough for crews to prevent the spread of the fire to an additional building attached to the initial structure,” North Tooele Fire said in a statement.
Crews were however able to prevent the spread of the fire to the main building and warehouse.
In all, an estimated 300,000 chickens were killed in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Corby Larsen, the vice president of the Fassio Egg Farm located at 3044 W. Erda Way, said that it was very difficult for employees to watch the chickens die in the fire.
The company has about 80 employees, and Larsen vowed to get back on track despite the difficult losses.
