A firefighter who was acting like a hero, is facing charges after setting a fire to a stable and killing multiple horses, according to police in Switzerland.

Vaud police said that on Saturday, 24 horses and ponies perished in the fire of a barn and a hangar at the National Equestrian Centre (IENA) site in Avenches.

A house adjacent to the hangar had been severely damaged.

Later in the day, police arrested a volunteer firefighter who acted heroically to extinguish the fire and claimed that one of his horses burned to death.

After putting out the fire, the 27-year-old firefighter said he was devastated that he could not save the 24 horses.

However, police became suspicious after seeing a photo of the suspect posing outside the burned stable.

Police said that the suspect might also be responsible for other fires in the area.

On Saturday, at around 12:00 a.m., 7 fires broke out in the region of Avenches.

The firefighter is facing charges of arson and animal cruelty.
