(Scroll down for video) A man was assigned a lawyer who specializes in defending people who are facing the death penalty.

22-year-old Matthew Graves may be put to death or receive a sentence of life in prison if he agrees to a plea deal with prosecutors.

This comes after police said Graves referred to himself as a monster for punching a defenseless baby.

Police were called to a home in Roy, Utah, at about 7:40 a.m., on a report of an infant not breathing.

The 41-day-old baby was rushed to a hospital, where doctors discovered that he suffered significant brain trauma.

The injuries included fractures, brain swelling, broken vertebrae and tissue damage.

Graves told police that he was angry because of the baby’s excessive crying, and that he punched him repeatedly in the head.

Graves stated that he could not remember how many times he punched the baby as he blacked out from rage.

According to police, Graves made comments about himself being a monster, and that he has lost all hope in life and is going to lose everything.

Police did not reveal his relationship with the baby. They did say that he lived in the home with the baby and a 5-year-old boy.

The boy told detectives that he saw Graves hit the baby before this incident. Police said that they found drugs in the apartment.
