A married woman who was forced to defecate in fields near her home, has been granted a divorce because her husband refused to build her a toilet, according to court documents in India.

The 24-year-old woman of Bhilwara, who was not identified, filed for divorce after five years of marriage, claiming that being forced to defecate in fields was a form of torture.

The woman told the court that she often has to wait until dark to relieve herself as she was ashamed to do so in broad daylight.

The woman begged her husband to build a toilet in their own home, but he refused, saying that his wife should not be different than everyone else.

The husband also claimed that the woman did not request a toilet before their marriage.

After ignoring a judge’s order to build a toilet in his home, the woman’s divorce request was granted.

The judge said that forcing a woman to defecate in public was a form of torture and cruelty.

The judge criticized the husband for using his money on cell phones and other luxuries, but not finding money for a toilet.
