(Scroll down for video) A teenager who was known as a great surfer and had won several competitions, tragically died while riding a huge wave.

While most people tried to get away from the path of Hurricane Irma, 16-year-old Zander Venezia from Barbados, went out to surf with his friends.

Photographer Jimmy Wilson said that he took a photo of Venezia, as he surfed on his last wave. However, as he was on his way in, he was reportedly knocked off his board.

His friends believe that the teenager hit a shallow reef, which knocked him unconscious. The other surfers rushed to help Venezia, and brought him to shore.

They performed CPR until emergency workers arrived. Venezia, who was still breathing, was rushed to a hospital. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

An autopsy showed that Venezia was unconscious when he drowned.

Venezia, who competed in the international surf scene, won the Rip Curl Grom Search in North Carolina, just two weeks before his death.
