Lilburn police said that they have arrested 66-year-old Irene Mercedes Handy, after being accused of assaulting police officers with a burning broom.

Handy has been charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, terroristic threats and acts, and harassing phone calls.

She was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail, pending a bail hearing.

According to the criminal complaint, on Thursday morning, officers responded to Handy’s home located on Old Manor Road, to investigate an illegal sign she had placed outside of the home.

While questioning Handy about the sign, police learned that she made threats against Gwinnett County State Court Judge Carla Brown.

When police tried to arrest her, Handy ran into her home.

She later came out of her home with a burning broom and attacked the officers with it.

One officer suffered injuries when he tried to knock out the burning broom from her hand.
