Two brothers who were home alone were scared when they heard noise coming from their basement.

Pennsylvania State Police said that a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother after they both thought they heard an intruder.

The two were home alone on Moran Road in Butler, when they thought they heard a noise in the basement at about 12:00 p.m.

The boys grabbed a gun from one room and loaded it with ammunition that they found in another room in order to protect themselves from the intruder.

At some point, the weapon discharged, hitting the 11-year-old boy.

The injured boy was taken to the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Luckily, he did not suffer any serious injuries.

He underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments.

Officers who went to the home did not see any signs of an intruder.

Police said that the investigation continues, and so far, no decision has been made if charges will be filed against the person who left the gun within reach of the children.

After the incident, Trooper Jessica Clouse warned parents and said: “This should serve as a learning lesson to always secure your weapons within your house.”
