A man was arrested after robbing a taxi driver in order to pay for his girlfriend’s abortion.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested an armed man for robbing the male taxi driver.

Police were called at 4:00 a.m. by the 48-year-old taxi driver in Nakano, who told officers that the suspect pulled a razor blade and threatened to cut him if he did not hand over money.

The taxi driver handed over 5,000 yen ($45) and the suspect, who was later identified as 29-year-old Kazuki Ogushi, fled.

25 minutes after the robbery, police were called again for an attempted robbery.

During that incident, a man entered a restaurant and demanded money from a 33-year-old male staff member while wielding a razor.

When he spotted a security guard, the suspect fled the scene empty-handed. He was apprehended nearby and was arrested.

Police discovered that the man in custody was the same man who robbed the taxi driver.

When he was questioned, Ogushi admitted to the crimes. He told police that he “needed the money to cover the cost of an abortion for a person living him.”
