A young girl will face a judge after she deliberately burned her younger brother.

The 12-year-old Alabama girl was arrested and charged with first-degree assault for setting her 10-year-old brother on fire.

The boy suffered serious burns to his back and arms, according to the police.

Police were called to Southeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Birmingham to investigate the boy’s injuries.

Detectives learned that the 10-year-old boy was set on fire by his sister. The names of the suspect and the victim were not released due to their age.

According to police, the 12-year-old girl sprayed her brother with flammable hair spritz before using a lighter to ignite the fire.

Detective James Harvey said the girl was released into the custody of her parents because of her age, but she was given mandatory guidelines and safety plans by the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which she must follow.

Harvey added that the girl will go to the Houston County Juvenile Court at a later date.

Police did not release a motive for the attack, but said that it was “foul play.”

The boy was eventually transferred to University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, where he is recovering.
