A female high school teacher will spend many years behind bars for receiving child poroghraphy from an underage student.

30-year-old Kandi F. Phillips of Texas, pleaded guilty to a charge of receipt of a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

She was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings to serve 97 months in federal prison.

According to documents filed in the case, Phillips was employed as a high school teacher at a public high school in Lubbock County.

During her employment, she began interacting online with a student from the school, and the communications turned sexual in nature.

Phillips received by way of the Internet photographs depicting this minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

The teacher was busted as part of Project Safe Childhood, which is a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

A number of state and local agencies are working together to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals, who sexually exploit children and to help the victims.

After her arrest, Phillips resigned from her teaching job.

In that resignation letter, Phillips wrote that she was in contact with the student on multiple occasions via email and text messages.

“The communication began last semester. Many of the text messages were personal, inappropriate, and led to talk of sexual nature. Never once was there any inappropriate physical contact with the student at or off school grounds,” she wrote.

While many people applauded the 8 year jail sentence, other people criticized prosecutors by saying that 97 months is too long a punishment for “non-physical” sex crime.
