(Scroll down for video) A woman was assaulted by a much older man during their first date.

77-year-old Richard Schmitt traveled two hours to Newport News, Virginia, to meet the 23-year-old woman.

The two went out on a date and the elderly man took the much younger woman on a shopping trip.

Schmitt spent $400 on clothes for the woman before they went to her home on Vernon Place.

The woman told police that she complained to Schmitt that he pretended to be younger on the dating website Plenty of Fish where they met.

She made it clear that she did not want to have a relationship with him, “but they can still be friends,” according to police.

Schmitt became angry and asked the woman to return the $400 worth of clothes, including a shirt she was already wearing, to him.

When she refused to hand over the clothes, a scuffled ensued.

The victim and witnesses from the area told police that Schmitt grabbed the woman by the neck and threw her to the ground.

He then got on top of her and proceeded to choke her, causing her to struggle to breathe.

She had injuries that were consistent with her claims.

Schmitt, however, claims that the woman pushed him first and he grabbed her by the neck as he fell to the ground.

Schmitt was charged with felony strangling of another causing wounds or injury.
