A woman died in a freak accident while riding an escalator in a store in Japan.

Now, an 81-year-old man was charged with negligent homicide for causing the death of the woman.

Police said that the woman died after a wheelchair fell on her while using the escalator inside a furniture store in Takamatsu.

The incident took place at around 10:40 a.m., while the elderly man pushed his wife’s wheelchair up the escalator to the third floor of the store.

As they reached the top of the escalator, the 81-year-old man lost his balance. As the two fell down the escalator, the wheelchair hit the woman behind them.

The victim, 76-year-old Harumi Watanabe, was rushed to the hospital, where she died about eight hours later.

The suspect’s wife who was in the wheelchair suffered a bone fracture while her husband suffered minor injuries.

The elderly man admitted that he used the escalator without giving it much thought despite the fact that the store had signs warning people not to use strollers or wheelchairs on the escalator.

The man was charged with negligent homicide.
