A man who learned that he was being investigated for sex crimes against children fled the country.

He was eventually located and arrested in China. He was then extradited to the United States to face charges.

41-year-old Toby Mendenhall from Portland, Oregon, was wanted on 8 counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 2 counts of first-degree sodomy.

According to court records, Mendenhall sexually abused three young girls. All of the victims were known to him, police said.

The court issued an arrest warrant against Mendenhall in December 2016, but he had already fled the country to China before the police could arrest him.

The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force worked with law enforcement officers in Shanghai, to locate, arrest and extradite the suspect.

Investigators believe there may be more victims and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Mendenhall was booked into the Washington County Jail and is being held on bail of $2.5 million.
