(Scroll down for video) The parents of a baby boy allowed him to die and be eaten by maggots for at least a week, according to police in Iowa.

Alta Vista police said that they have arrested 20-year-old Cheyanne Harris and 28-year-old Zachary Koehn after being accused of allowing their son, 4-month-old Sterling Daniel Koehn, to die in a swing.

The parents have been charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment.

They were booked into the Chickasaw County Jail, where they are being held on $100,000 bail.

If convicted, both suspects face mandatory life sentences.

According to the police investigation, Zachary called 911 to report that at 9:00 a.m., Cheyanne fed the baby and he was fine.

At around 12:00 p.m., he went to check on Sterling and noticed that he was dead.

Police officers who arrived at the home located at 304 West Wilson, found Sterling in a baby swing covered in maggots.

He weighed under 7 pounds.

The medical examiner said that an autopsy revealed Sterling was left untouched in the baby swing for a week.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide due to failure to provide critical care.
