(Scroll down for video) Someone posted a photo to Facebook showing two white girls holding an African American girl on leashes.

This caused a firestorm, and some parents picked their kids up early and others demanded the teacher be fired.

The Mitchell Elementary School in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, apologized about the incident and assured parents that the situation is not the way it seemed.

The incident occurred during a history enrichment program about the Pilgrims.

The photo showed the teacher and the three students dressed in Pilgrim costumes.

The two white girls held leashed that were attached to the dress of an 8-year-old African American girl who was crawling on the floor.

The photo seemed to depict slavery, but it was not the case.

The strings are called “lead strings,” which were used in the 17th Century for helping children learn how to walk.

The school said that the teacher asked for volunteers during the class and the African American girl volunteered to act as the “baby.”

This was not the first time this teacher made photos of the act.

Another photo that was shared online showed a white girl acting as the “baby” and was attached to the “lead strings.”
