22-year-old Marisa Harris of Olney, Maryland, died after the 12-year-old boy, who police believe was attempting suicide, jumped from an overpass in Virginia.

Virginia state police said that Harris was driving eastbound on highway I-66 when the boy jumped from the Cedar Lane overpass.

He landed on her Ford Escape about 4:18 p.m. and Harris lost control of the car.

Her boyfriend who was in the passenger seat of the car was able to steer the car off the highway.

Harris died at the scene. The boy was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Ironically, according to her family members, Harris was a graduate student of the Marymount University in Arlington, where she studied clinical counseling.

Her mother said “if given the chance, Harris could have helped the boy who had jumped.”

Police said they are investigating the incident as an attempted suicide.
