2-year-old boy dies by hanging himself from makeshift gate meant to keep him locked in bedroomBy Emily Lewis 4:42 AM November 15, 2017
A young boy died after he was locked in a filthy bedroom while his mother and her boyfriend were watching TV.
22-year-old Patricia Giddings of Plattsburgh, New York, was sentenced to prison for the death of her 2-year-old son Ellyah Elvidge, who was hanged on a makeshift gate.
Giddings pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison at the Clinton County Court.
The judge reprimanded the mother for using plywood instead of a baby safety gate.
Giddings and her then-boyfriend placed the child in his room and blocked the door with a 4-foot-high plywood.
The boy played with the plywood until his head got stuck in a whole that had been cut out in it. The toddler was unable to free himself and died of asphyxiation.
The mother’s former boyfriend, Brandon Bushey, 25, pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide. He is due to be sentenced at the end of the month.
