Husband who took blame for uninsured wife’s car crash jailed after her lipstick was found on driver’s airbagBy Tanya Clark 5:58 AM November 26, 2017
A man in the United Kingdom, who wanted their insurance company to pay for damages done during a car crash, was jailed.
44-year-old Mark Smith of Sowerby, North Yorkshire, was arrested after his 22-year-old wife Sarah crashed his car.
According to police, Sarah never passed her driving test and was uninsured when she crashed into a home, causing more than £40,000 ($53,000) of damage.
According to police, Sarah called her husband Mark to the scene and the two conspired to lie to police and say that the husband crashed the car.
However, as detectives were investigating the crash, they found Sarah’s lipstick on the driver’s side airbag.
The couple’s attorney claimed that the lipstick may have gotten on the airbag when Sarah was thrown around during the crash.
The couple stuck to their story in police interviews and throughout a nine-day trial. They also had witnesses who testified that they saw Mark driving the vehicle.
However, the jury at the Teesside Crown Court did not believe the couple and they were found guilty of fraud and perverting the course of justice.
Smith was sentenced to 7 months in prison while he wife avoided jail. Her seven-month sentence was suspended for a year after the judge heard that she is pregnant with the couple’s second child.
