(Scroll down for video) The parents of three children are accused of abusing them over a period of several years until they were taken away by Child Protective Services, according to police in Texas.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said that they have arrested 32-year-old James Howard Chalkley and 22-year-old Cheyanne Chalkley after being accused of abusing their three children, ages 10, 5, and 3.

Both parents were charged with injury to a child.

Child Protective Services took custody of the three children and they were placed with foster families.

They were booked into jail, pending bail hearings.

According to the police investigation, James regularly hit his children with a belt, switches, and thorns.

His wife, Cheyanne, was present during the beatings and she did nothing to stop the abuse.

When James asked Cheyanne whether the punishments were too harsh, she said that she would hit them more.

The children told investigators that Cheyanne also hit them when James was not home.

One time, James found cat feces in a closet.

James picked up the cat feces and smeared it on the kids’ faces.

He also forced the kids to brush their teeth with the cat feces.

The abuse came to light when the 5-year-old girl’s teacher noticed bruises on the child’s back.
