A promising information technology (IT) engineer lost her life after her classmate flew into a rage and set her on fire, according to police in India.

Adambakkam police said that they have arrested 22-year-old M. Akash after being accused of burning 21-year-old S. Indhuja because she refused to accept his marriage proposal.

Akash has been charged with murder and causing grievous bodily harm.

According to the police investigation, Akash and Indhuja attended the same school, where they studied IT engineering.

Akash asked Indhuja out numerous times on dates but she refused.

Akash also proposed to her several times, but she was not interested in him.

Eventually, Akash began stalking Indhuja.

On Monday, at around 8:45 p.m., Akash came to Indhuja’s home and he knocked on the door.

Indhuja’s refused to open but after Akash begged to speak with his classmate for just a few minutes he was allowed inside.

Akash again asked Indhuja to marry him but she rejected him.

Akash then grabbed a can of gasoline and doused Indhuja.

He then set her on fire and fled the scene.

Indhuja’s mother Renuka, 47, and sister Nivedha, 19, attempted to extinguish the flames and help the victim but they too suffered severe burns.

All three were rushed to the Government Kilpauk College Hospital, where Indhuja died.

Renuka and Nivedha are said to be in critical condition.

Akash planned to commit suicide but police arrested him before he took his life.
