Teacher jailed and ordered to register as sex offender for showing obscene photos to studentBy Emily Lewis 5:19 AM November 19, 2017
A teacher was jailed for showing nude photos to an underage student.
The teacher from California was arrested after a girl told school officials that 38-year-old Jason Whited sent absence photos to her.
The South Valley teacher was immediately placed on leave and the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate the claim that he sent lewd photos to the underage female student.
Whited worked in the visual and performing arts department at the Orosi High School at the time when he began sexually harassing the girl by sending her pornographic photos and inappropriate messages, according to prosecutors.
In court, the student called Whited’s actions disgusting and said that she is depressed and sometimes suicidal as a result of what happened to her.
Kerri Lopez, the Tulare County Assistant District Attorney, said: “If somebody is having a difficult time at home or difficult time in life, I think they do tend to gravitate towards a teacher, someone they feel comfortable with. It’s up to the teacher to keep that professionalism, and sometimes that doesn’t happen.”
Whited pleaded guilty to one felony count of showing a minor an obscene photo.
He was sentenced to 180 days in county jail, 3 years probation, and he must register as a sex offender.
